Arcimoto is introducing a radical three-wheel drive electric leaning tricycle that it believes can beat electric bikes.
Oregon-based Arcimoto has introduced a radical new three-wheeled, full-suspension electric bike known as the Mean Lean Machine (MLM).
The MLM is a mix of electric tricycle and bicycle
The new Electric Tricycle uses tilt technology to help it turn more like a two-wheeled vehicle while maintaining the stability of a three-wheeled vehicle.
The MLM is built using tilting tech C Level Executive List nology developed by Arcimoto's tilted vehicle division which it obtained by acquiring Tilting Motor Works early last year.
Think of it like a mini Arcimoto FUV , except:
It leans when cornering and has pedals.
It has a generator for cable drive and is all-wheel drive.
And the footprint is more in line with electric bikes .
As Arcimoto founder and CEO Mark Frohnmayer explained:
THE MEAN LEAN MACHINE REFLECTS ARCIMOTO'S COMMITMENT TO PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY. WE START WITH THE INCREDIBLE THREE-WHEEL TILT TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED BY OUR TILTING MOTOR WORKS DIVISION AND THEN FILL THE MLM WITH NEW CUTTING-EDGE FEATURES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES , INCLUDING HUB MOTORS AT ALL THREE CORNERS AND A PEDAL GENERATOR, TO PROVIDE AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE. . UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN THE ELECTRIC BIKE CATEGORY .
Features of MLM
First of all, it is an all-wheel drive vehicle. There's a hub motor in each wheel, which means it should have pretty impressive handling and traction.
Plus, based on the sophisticated STAFL VCU controller module, it's probably smart enough to activate traction control with those three motors.
Then, despite having a pedal interface like a bicycle or e-bike, there is no mechanical connection between the pedals and the wheels. Everything is drive-by-wire.
And there appears to be a stationary exercise bike mode, where the MLM remains parked and the rider uses it like a three-wheeled Peloton to exercise while charging its main battery.
There are pedal generators on e-trikes, and also e-bikes that can be recharged when used on a trainer and activate their regenerative braking, but it's rare to see what Arcimoto has done here.
The MLM electric tricycle combines design and stability
Then, of course, there is the leaning aspect of MLM. Three-wheeled electric tricycles are more stable than two-wheeled electric bicycles as they have the inherent stability of three points of contact on the ground.
The only problem is that when cornering hard, stationary three-wheelers tend to want to throw the rider off the bike or tip over. Usually both.
But inclined tricycles are different. They combine the stability of a three-wheeled vehicle with the intuitive steering of a two-wheeled vehicle.
It's a complicated setup that requires a sophisticated suspension to work effectively, but judging by the performance of the launch prototype, Arcimoto appears to have nailed it.
